Can you really write a beauty blog, when you don’t feel beautiful?
Behind the Scenes Beauty turned 5 this week. This little beauty blog started as a project to get me through the trials of beauty school, and evolved into a research project for all of my friends and colleagues constant beauty woes. Today, I’m grateful for traffic on popular posts about eyebrows, glasses, and waxing mistakes, helping people all over the world with their beauty woes.
A little over a year ago, I shut down the blog. In the years of Behind the Scenes Beauty, depression caused breaks in my writing and beautifying, but I never worried I wasn’t worthy of the beauty blog genre.
I started to think I wasn’t worthy of the beauty blog genre.
Late 2016 and 2017 were the hardest months of my life. Nothing makes you give up self-care and feel fugly like poking and prodding, IV lines attached to your arm, and the constant need for yoga pants for laziness, not for fashion, or even yoga.
Months of crazy medical treatments changed me. I threw away many of my possessions, including cosmetics. I stopped wearing makeup (now I wear a couple of items sparingly). A lot of my hair fell out and still have a bald spot below my occipital bone: a single eye in the back of my head visible when my hair is in a top knot. Manicuring my eyebrows and offering beauty advice weren’t my priorities. Wanting to live a simpler life, I wasn’t sure beauty and simplicity go hand in hand.
Can the beauty blog exist in a minimalist life?
Doctors bills and medication put my spending in perspective. I didn’t want to invest in products, treatments, or the latest “it” items anymore.
There’s hardly a single selfie from those months of my life. I shuttered anytime I saw a photo of my puffy face and body. I no longer felt beautiful. Was I a beauty blog fraud?
But, the world is full of beautiful things beyond hair, skin, nails, and the wonderful secrets of back stage beauty. Today, I am illness-free, on the path to recovery, and ready to explore the future of this blog. What does beauty really mean, and what kind of help can I offer the world?
So, I ask, dear readers, what do you want to see in the world of Behind the Scenes Beauty? Tell me about it in the comments!
Peace. Love. and Bobby Pins.
